Abstract

This report containing the annual biological monitoring programme within the national soil quality monitoring programme on the same site describes the soil nematode fauna in the litter and the mineral soil layers of 20 forest sites on sandy soils in the Netherlands. It describes the soil nematode fauna in two different layers, divided over three types of forests: deciduous, pine and mixed. These sites were to be sampled every five years starting in 1994 in order to detect possible trends in quality in the Dutch forests. The sites were chosen as being representative of Dutch forests. The number of nematodes in the litter layer was found to be much higher than in the mineral soil. Aphelenchoides was present in both layers on every site. The genera Plectus, Wilsonema, Acrobeloides and Filenchus were found in almost every forest. Some taxa seemed to show preference for a certain layer: Bunonema, Mesodorylaimus, Metateratocephalus, Plectus, Teratocephalus and Wilsonema schuurmansstekhoveni for the litter layer and Acrobeloides, Cephalenchus and Cervidellus serratus for the mineral soil. Only small differences were found between the layers with respect to the diversity (H', SR, J') and 'maturity'indices (PPI, MI and SigmaMI). The trophic diversity (T index) was, however, higher in the mineral soil layer. The species composition was found to differ between the types of forests ; no differences were found with respect to the number of nematodes and the indices.
