English Abstract
In this report data on foodborne infections and intoxication are presented as notified by consumers to the Regional Inspectorate for Health Protection (IGB/KvW), as examined by Municipal Health Services (MHS) and as legally notified by physicians to the Inspectorate for Health Care, in the Netherlands, in 1997. Results of 1997 were compared with results from previous years. In the Netherlands in 1997 586 eoutbreaks of foodborne infections and intoxications, 481 endemic (single) cases and 13 patients from unknown source (outbreak versus endemic case) were registered. In total 3324 ill persons were involved. The occurrence in 1997 was similar to the findings in 1996. A possible cause of disease was found in 25% of notified incidents at the IGB/KvW. Of outbreaks examined by the MHS, 55% had a potential cause disclosed.

In dit rapport worden gegevens gepresenteerd van voedselinfecties en -vergiftigingen in Nederland in 1997 zoals gemeld door consumenten bij de regionale Inspecties Gezondheidsbescherming, zoals onderzocht door GGD's en zoals aangegeven door behandelend artsen aan de Inspectie Gezondheidszorg. De resultaten van 1997 worden vergeleken met bevindingen in voorgaande jaren. In Nederland werden in 1997 586 explosies van voedselinfectie en -vergiftiging, 481 endemische gevallen en 13 patienten met onbekende achtergrond (explosie versus endemisch geval) geregistreerd. In totaal waren daarbij 3324 ziektegevallen betrokken. Het voorkomen in 1997 was zeer vergelijkbaar met de bevindingen in 1996. Een mogelijk veroorzakende verwekker werd gevonden bij 25% van de bij de IGB/KvW gemelde incidenten. Bij de GGD's werd in 55% van de onderzochte explosies een mogelijke oorzaak gevonden.
