English Abstract In the period 2002 - 2005 the medical radiation
exposure in the Netherlands increased by 25 per cent from 0.52 up to 0.65
mSv per caput. Technological development makes it possible to perform more,
including more complicated, examinations.
Under the authority of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, RIVM
collects and analyses information on medical radiation applications, such as
radiological and nuclear medicine examinations. This information is
intended to stimulate optimal use of radiation in health care. The mean
cause of the increase in radiation exposure is the increase in the
examinations, especially important is the increase in the number of CT
examinations. Of the above-mentioned 0.65 mSv, 0.27 mSv is due to CT
examinations. In the period investigated, the radiation exposure from CT
examinations increased by 42 per cent. PET examinations only make a small
contribution, but their numbers show a sharp rise. This means that PET
examinations make a significantly more important contribution to the
radiation exposure caused by nuclear medicine examinations in 2005 than in
2002.
In this report, recently collected information used for updating the
Information system on Medical Radiation Applications (IMS) website
(http://www.rivm.nl/ims in Dutch) is presented and background information
on sources supplied. For more information see the IMS website:

website Informatiesysteem Medische Stralingstoepassingen (IMS;
http://www.rivm.nl/ims) is geactualiseerd. Daarnaast biedt het
achtergrondinformatie over de verschillende
informatiebronnen.
