English Abstract
A tool to screen health risks of spray applications was developed by RIVM for the Dutch Food and Product Safety Authority (nVWA). The nVWA inspectors can use the tool during their routine inspections in an easy and rapid way, to assess the risk for consumers after inhalatory exposure. Consumer products are more often placed on the market in spray application, for example deodorants which previously were only available as roller or stick. Current risk evaluations by the manufacturer of such products are not always suitable. The results obtained with the tool cannot replace a detailed risk assessment.
If the tool indicates a reason for concern, the user can contact the manufacturer to evaluate the results. If there is still reason for concern, nVWA can contact RIVM for a more detailed assessment to characterize possible risks.
The tool screens the risk by combining input on exposure and hazard in a risk matrix. The tool is question-based, where the answers will lead to a classification according to the risk matrix based on estimates of exposure and hazard. The inhalation exposure is calculated on the basis of default values present in the tool, or by case-specific input. The hazard is based on the classification of the individual substances in the product.

Het RIVM heeft een instrument ontwikkeld voor de nieuwe Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit (nVWA), waarmee inspecteurs een eerste screening kunnen maken van het risico als consumenten chemische stoffen inademen bij het gebruik van spuitproducten. Consumentenproducten worden steeds vaker als spuitproduct aangeboden, zoals deodorants die voorheen in de vorm van rollers of sticks op de markt waren. De huidige risicobeoordeling van de fabrikant voor dergelijke producten is daar niet altijd op toegespitst. nVWA-inspecteurs kunnen het instrument snel en eenvoudig gebruiken als hulpmiddel tijdens reguliere inspecties. De resultaten van het instrument mogen niet vergeleken worden met een volwaardige risicobeoordeling.
Het instrument geeft een indicatie of er aanleiding is het product met de fabrikant nader te bekijken. Als de fabrikant dan niet kan aantonen dat het product veilig is, dan kan de nVWA het potentiele risico in een gedetailleerde risicobeoordeling in kaart laten brengen.
Het instrument screent het risico door de mate van de inhalatieblootstelling met een gevaarindicatie te combineren. De blootstelling wordt berekend door middel van standaardwaarden die bij een spuitproduct horen. Als deze waarden niet bekend zijn, voert de inspecteur deze informatie in. De toxiciteit wordt bepaald door de wettelijke classificatie van de stof, de zogenoemde R-zinnen.
