English Abstract In 2001, version 2.2 of the IMAGE model was completed
as result of a multi-year development trajectory. Besides an ensuing
internal discussion at RIVM on the way forward with global integrated
assessment tools, the Directorate General of the Environment (DGM) of the
Ministry of Housing and the Environment raised the question of whether or
not the IMAGE path would still offer sufficient potential to address current
and emerging policy themes and questions adequately. This report summarizes
the outcome of these two discussions and outlines the derived plans with
IMAGE in 2002 and the next couple of years. The plans for further
development of methodologies and tools, initiated in 2002, offer good
prospects to build enhanced capacities to perform state-of-the-art analyses
in support of ongoing climate policy discussions; to broaden the scope by
embedding the climate issue in the broader context of Sustainable
Development; and to strengthen the European research area aiming for a
jointly developed, maintained and applied set of tools. A step-by-step,
modular development strategy implies that sufficient capacity continues to
be available to contribute to major MNP policy advice
work.

In 2001 is het IMAGE 2.2 model afgerond als afsluiting
van een meerjarig ontwikkelingstraject. Naast een binnen RIVM gestarte
discussie over de verder te volgen strategie t.a.v. het mondiale Integrated
Assessment instrumentarium, heeft het Directoraat-Generaal Milieubeheer
(DGM) van VROM de vraag opgeworpen of de IMAGE lijn nog voldoende uitzicht
biedt op adequate bijdragen aan de huidige en toekomstige beleidsthema's en
vragen. Deze notitie bevat de uitkomst van die twee discussies en geeft aan
hoe de daaruit gedestilleerde plannen van het IMAGE team voor 2002 en
tentatief voor de volgende jaren eruit zien. Een coherent pakket
modelaanpassingen, verbeteringen uitbreidingen richt zich op: een verbeterde
capaciteit om state-of-the-art analyses voor de klimaatdiscussie te kunnen
leveren; een verbreding naar belangrijke thema's rond Duurzame
Ontwikkeling; versterken van de samenwerking binnen Europa in de richting
van een gemeenschappelijk ontwikkeld, beheerd en toegepast instrumentarium.
Door een stapsgewijze, modulaire aanpak kan parallel aan het
ontwikkelingstraject voldoende capaciteit voor belangrijke MNP
beleidsadvisering geleverd worden.
