English Abstract In accordance with the Netherlands Decree on Cadmium,
Instrumental Neutron Activating Analysis (INAA) is a primary technique for
the determination of cadmium in several products. This technique requires
hardly any sample preparation, but can only be done in a few laboratories in
the Netherlands. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) is a second
technique. The determination of cadmium in a solid material by means of AAS
requires digestion of the samples before analysis, but can be done in many
laboratories. In the current Decree a sample preparation is described in
which the digestion of polyvinylchloride (pvc) causes loss of cadmium.
Therefore a sample preparation for Flame-AAS has been developed by digestion
of plastic samples by means of open microwave digestion with sulfuric acid
and hydrogen peroxide. This causes no lost of cadmium. The complete
analysis is based on prEN 1122: "Determination of cadmium in plastics with
the method of the wet decomposition" (1995) and is suitable for the tested
matrices polypropylene, polystyrene, acrylonitril butadiene styrene (abs),
pvc, polyethylene and polyamide. The required apparatus allows this method
to be easily performed by a great number of laboratories. For regulatory
purposes, a generic measurement method is proposed which allows a broad
spectrum of laboratory practices, provided that performance requirements are
Derhalve is
voldaan
