English Abstract
A study of the literature on the health effects of low relative humidity indicates that the inhabitants of about five percent of Dutch homes could be affected by low relative humidity (30 percent and below). These inhabitants, particularly contact lens wearers and people with allergies and skin complaints, could experience symptoms such as dry eyes and dry skin during the heating season. When relative humidity is particularly low (10 percent and below), the mucous membranes of the nose get dryer, which increases the chance of a respiratory infection. However, such low relative humidity is rare in Dutch homes. Perceiving the air as dry appears to depend not only on the relative humidity but also on other factors, such as too little ventilation, high temperature and polluted air. Therefore, air humidification does not necessarily provide a satisfactory solution for situations in which people perceive the air as being too dry. Furthermore, under humid conditions the air quality is generally perceived as being less pleasant: as the relative humidity increases the air is perceived as being stuffier and less acceptable (from 50 percent RH upwards). These effects are enhanced when the temperature increases and/or the air is polluted. This report gives an overview of the scientific literature published on this subject since 1990. The results of research performed in the workplace and in climate chambers have been translated to the situation in Dutch homes to give an indication of the effects that can be expected.

In het stookseizoen kunnen bewoners van ongeveer vijf procent van de Nederlandse woningen last hebben van een lage relatieve luchtvochtigheid (vanaf 30 procent RV en lager). Vooral contactlensdragers en mensen met allergieen en huidklachten, kunnen last krijgen van bijvoorbeeld droge ogen en een droge huid. Dat is de conclusie van een literatuurstudie naar de effecten van een lage relatieve luchtvochtigheid op de gezondheid. Bij een nog lagere relatieve luchtvochtigheid (vanaf 10 procent en lager) worden ook de slijmvliezen van de neus droger, wat de kans op een infectie aan de luchtwegen verhoogt. Een dergelijke lage relatieve luchtvochtigheid wordt echter nauwelijks aangetroffen in Nederlandse woningen. Als mensen de lucht als droog ervaren, is dat afhankelijk van meer factoren dan de relatieve luchtvochtigheid, zoals te weinig ventilatie, hoge temperatuur en verontreinigde lucht. Daarom is luchtbevochtiging geen eenduidige oplossing voor situaties waarin de lucht als te droog wordt ervaren. Bovendien blijkt dat in het algemeen juist in vochtige ruimtes de luchtkwaliteit als onprettig wordt ervaren: de lucht wordt als bedompter en minder acceptabel ervaren naarmate de relatieve luchtvochtigheid stijgt (vanaf circa 50 procent). Dit effect wordt versterkt door een toename van temperatuur (vanaf circa 23 graden C) en/of luchtverontreiniging. Het rapport beschrijft de studies in de wetenschappelijke literatuur vanaf 1990. Er zijn alleen gegevens beschikbaar van buitenlands onderzoek in werk- en testomgevingen. Daardoor moet de vertaalslag naar Nederlandse woningen als een indicatie worden gezien van de te verwachten effecten.
