English Abstract The natural background of ionising radiation varies in
space and time. These variations and the underlying processes are
thoroughly investigated and described. A major part of the study is based
on an analysis of data obtained from the Dutch 'National Radioactivity
Monitoring Network (NRM)'. Outdoor external radiation levels are due to
cosmogenic radiation, (natural) radioactivity in and on top of the soil and
natural radionuclides in the air, the latter dominated by Rn-222 and
short-lived decay products. The spatial variation in the terrestrial
radiation level has been mapped, using a Geographical Information System
(GIS). It is further shown that most of the temporal variations in the
external radiation level are explained by three time-varying parameters, all
of them readily available in practice. Based on these results, a
compensation method for the natural radiation background was developed that
can be used to identify unusual events, for instance, a radiological
accident. Time-series of airborne concentrations of Rn-222 and decay
products show capricious patterns. Averaged values, however, reveal a
seasonal trend, as well as a diurnal oscillation in the summer period. A
correlation was found between Rn-222 (progeny) on one hand, and the vertical
atmospheric mixing, the wind velocity, the humidity of the air and the
precipitation rate on the other hand. Finally, results are presented of
model calculating the dispersion of outdoor Rn-222 on a continental
scale.
vervalprodukten.
buitenlucht vertoont grillige tijdspatronen. Gemiddelde waarden tonen
