English Abstract
The model that is used by RIVM for the ozone forecast (PROZON) produces useful results. The model that is used for the forecast of the concentration of particulate matter in ambient air (PROPART) is less accurate. These are the conclusions from a comparison of the forecasts over the years 2005 and 2006 with observations. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment gives a daily forecast for the maximum concentration ozone and the daily average concentration of particulate matter in ambient air. Particulate matter and ozone have adverse health effects.

PROZON and PROPART are based on statistics of observed concentrations and meteorological conditions from the past, combined with actual observations and weather forecasts. They produce day values at monitoring locations.

There is a strong relationship between temperature and ozone concentrations. Therefore, uncertainties in the weather forecast contribute significantly to the uncertainties in the ozone forecast. PROZON overestimates the highest ozone concentrations. If there is a trend in the relationship between temperature and ozone concentration then the model might be improved by an update of the statistics using observations of the past five years only.

For the forecast of particulate matter the model uncertainty is so large that the uncertainties in the weather forecast does not play a substantial role in the general model performance. Particulate matter is sometimes transported from far away and the dependency on meteorological conditions is less clear than for ozone. Still, the model performance is comparable to alternative models based on neural networks. Therefore, it is not easy to improve the model.

At this moment the day values of PROZON and PROPART are often better than those from more complex models which explicitly describe sources and transport in space and time. When actual ground and satellite observations will be integrated in these more complex models they will possibly become better in the near future.

Het model dat het RIVM gebruikt voor de ozonverwachting (PROZON) blijkt goed bruikbaar. Het model voor de verwachting van de concentratie fijn stof in de buitenlucht (PROPART) is minder nauwkeurig. Dat blijkt uit een vergelijking van de modelverwachtingen over 2005 en 2006 met metingen. Het RIVM stelt dagelijks een verwachting op voor de maximale concentratie ozon en de daggemiddelde concentratie fijn stof in de buitenlucht. Fijn stof en ozon zijn schadelijk voor de gezondheid.

PROZON en PROPART maken gebruik van statistieken van in het verleden gemeten concentraties en weersomstandigheden, gecombineerd met actuele metingen en weersverwachtingen. Ze geven dagwaarden op meetlocaties.

Het verband tussen temperatuur en ozonconcentratie is sterk. Daarom is voor de ozonverwachting de weersverwachting een belangrijke bron van onzekerheid. PROZON overschat de hoogste ozonconcentraties. Als er een trend is in het verband tussen temperatuur en ozonconcentratie kan het model verbeterd worden door opnieuw statistieken te bepalen op basis van alleen meetgegevens van de meest recente vijf jaar.

Voor de fijnstofverwachting is de modelonzekerheid zo groot dat de onzekerheid in de weersverwachting geen noemenswaardige rol speelt in de algemene modelprestaties. Fijn stof wordt soms van ver aangevoerd en de afhankelijkheid van de weersomstandigheden is minder duidelijk dan voor ozon. Wel presteert het model ongeveer even goed als alternatieve modellen gebaseerd op neurale netwerken. Het is daarom niet eenvoudig te verbeteren.

Op dit moment zijn de dagwaarden van PROZON en PROPART vaak beter dan van complexere modellen die bronnen en transport expliciet beschrijven in plaats en tijd. Als actuele grond- en satellietwaarnemingen kunnen worden geintegreerd in deze complexere modellen worden zij mogelijk beter in de nabije toekomst.
