English Abstract The survey of the River Waal was carried out during
part of the summer of 1995 to gain more insight into the plankton dynamics
of aquatic systems adjacent to the mainstream of a river. A high sampling
frequency (twice a week and occasionally three times a day), combined with
physico-chemical and plankton analyses, resulted in a data set, which was
used among other things to come to the following conclusions. The water
between the groins does not differ from the mainstream, contrary to the
water in the dead arm. Gradients in plankton abundancies and composition,
nutrient concentrations and extinction suggest, compared to the mainstream,
much higher plankton production and plankton dynamics near the blind side of
the dead arm. Gradients in some diatomic algae species and concentrations
of suspended matter may suggest a settling zone halfway along the sampled
transect. The appearance of high abundancies of crustaceans and the green
algae Pandorina morum suggests high retention rates near the end of the dead
arm. The influence of these adjacent aquatic systems on the river is put
forward in the discussion.
Gradienten in
vormen.
