English Abstract
The contribution of a 250 MWe co-generation plant assumed to be located in an urban area with about 300,000 inhabitants, to the photochemical ozone formation on the local scale is estimated by means of the flue gas dispersion model STACKS. In this study a limited number of photochemical reactions has been included in the STACKS-model. A sensitivity analysis based on the Carbon Bond Mechanism (CBM-IV) has shown that in the initial phase of the plume three chemical reactions (that is, the photostationary state and the reaction of nitrogen monoxide with ambient oxygen) are sufficient to model the ozone and nitrogen dioxide concentrations within the required accuracy ranges. During the initial phase of the plume there is only a minor oxidant production. When, next to nitrogen oxides also formaldehyde and carbon monoxide are present in the flue gases, the total ozone production is estimated to be c. 1.0 ozone molecules for each carbon monoxide molecule which is fully oxidized and to c. 1.3 ozone molecule for each oxidized formaldehyde molecule.
