English Abstract
In this report, results are reported of a survey on levels of PCDDs and PSDFs in cow's milk in the period October to December 1991, from dairy farms in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSW) in the lickebaert area, the Netherlands. Levels are expressed in picograms 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxicity equivalents (TEQ) per gram of milk fat, calculated on the basis of international toxicity equivalence factors (TEF) of individual components. Samples consisted of time- averaged sampling of cow's milk during periods of one month of five dairy farms. The following conclusions have been drawn. 1. Dioxin levels in cowq's milk in the Lickebaert area were increased compared to the previous period. The concentration of dioxins were between 54 +/- 0.6 pg TEQ/g of fat. The highest levels are found in November 1991 (averaged 9.5 pg TEQ/g of fat). 2. The period in 1991 in which the increased levels have been observed, is comparable with the same period in the year before (1990). 3. Comparing two successieve years, it seems that there is a effect of the season on the dioxin levels in com's milk. This effect may be contributed to feeding habits (ensilage) weather conditions (wind, rain) and perhaps the decreased growthrate of the grass.
