  National Reference Laboratories (NRLs)

According to Council Directive 92/117/EC and Regulation (EC) 882/2004, each EU Member State shall designate approved National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) for the zoonoses and zoonotic agents. The tasks and duties of the NRLs as listed in Regulation 882/2004, are comparable to those of the CRL, but performed at national instead of EU level.
The NRLs for Salmonella represent the 27 EU Member States and Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Additional, also Northern Ireland and EU candidate countries Turkey and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) are represented with an NRL for Salmonella.

Food and Waterborne Disease network laboratories (FWD labs)

From 2 October 2007, the coordination activities of Enter-net dedicated surveillance network have been integrated into the activities of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm. Enter-net has long performed successfully as the international surveillance network for human gastrointestinal infection in Europe, covering infections with Salmonella, verocytotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) O157 and Campylobacter. ECDC aims to maintain and develop further the surveillance activities and thus, continue the international development both in epidemiology and laboratory fields. The alert function of the Enter-net is sustained and transferred from the former network hub to the Food and Waterborne Disease (FWD) team at the ECDC.
For more information refer to: http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/Activities/Surveillance/Enter-net/

Parallel to the CRL-Salmonella activities and together with the Health Protection Agency (United Kingdom) and the Central Veterinary Institute (the Netherlands), interlaboratory comparison studies on serotyping, phage typing and antimicrobial resistance testing are organised for the FWD network laboratories.

The list of the FWD labs can be found by clicking on the ENLs button (left) and then on the relevant country on the map.
