Dr N.E.L. (Nico) Meessen
Doctor Nico Meessen (1954) works as an expert at the Centre of Infectious Disease Research, Diagnosis and Screening (IDS), which is part of the RIVM Centre for Infectious Disease Control. He is also a medical specialist (Medical Microbiologist) in the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG).
Up-to-date knowledge in microbiology is essential in the fight against new pathogens and antibiotic resistance. Innovative techniques are needed to prevent and combat the spread of infectious diseases. To achieve this, we are developing networks with other professionals within and outside RIVM, and IDS has a key role to play in bringing together this knowledge.
Nico Meessen studied Biology and Medicine at Radboud University Nijmegen. In 1996, he received his PhD in respiratory physiology from Maastricht University. He is a registered Medical Microbiologist.
Before joining RIVM, Nico Meessen was a member of the medical staff of the Medical Microbiology Department and Head of Infectious Diseases Prevention at UMCG. From 2010 to 2014, he was Director of Medical Affairs, Quality and Safety at UMCG, responsible for quality and continuity of care, patient safety, professionalisation of the incident evaluation and organisation of the crisis management.
In addition to his position at RIVM, Nico Meessen works one day a week as medical specialist at UMCG.
