Walter van Wijngaarden RC, MA (1964) is Deputy Director-General and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at RIVM. In this role he is responsible for the general and financial management.
Walter van Wijngaarden studied Military Business Administration at the Royal Military Academy (Koninklijke Militaire Academie), Business Economics at the Catholic University of Brabant (Katholieke Universiteit Brabant) and Register Controlling at the VU University of Amsterdam.
Between 1990 and 2001, he held various positions of leadership at the Dutch Ministry of Defence. In 2001, he made the transition to the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment (Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu), where his positions included Head of Management and Management Director.
As of March 2012, Walter van Wijngaarden has worked at RIVM. His portfolio encompasses the staff departments of Support Services, Facility Management, Finance, Planning and Control, Information Services and Organisation and Personnel.
He is President of the Middelburg Auditing Court and teaches Management & Organisation at NivRA/Nyenrode.
