Prof. dr A.N. (André) van der Zande (b. 1952) studied biology at Leiden University, from which he graduated cum laude. In 1986, he took charge of various major knowledge institutes in Wageningen, including Alterra, while also holding the Belvedere Chair of Spatial Planning and Cultural History at Wageningen University.
In 2007, Prof. dr van der Zande was appointed Secretary-General at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (as it was then known). He had previously held a number of positions within the ministry. From 2002 to 2007 he was the Director-General responsible for rural areas, nature and biodiversity, policy on the use of minerals and fertilizers, and general environmental policy.
On 1 January 2011, André van der Zande took up his latest appointment as Director-General of RIVM.
