Dissemination of genetically modified microorganisms and their DNA upon introduction into the environment: a literature study

Verspreiding van genetisch gemodificeerde micro-organismen en hun DNA na introductie in het milieu: een literatuurstudie

Synopsis

This report describes the results of a literature study on various aspects which are of importance for the risk assessment of the deliberate introduction of genetically modified microorganisms in the environment, especially in the soil. These aspects concern, 1) the effects of large-scale, agricultural use of Rhizobia over the last decades, 2) the role of natural transformation as a mechanism for the transfer and proliferation of genetic material in the environment and 3) an overview of methods for detection and identification of microorganisms in the environment and the determination of the microbial diversity in a population, focussing on DNA/RNA-based methods.
