Synopsis

An initial environmental risk assessment has been carried out for musk ketone and musk xylene, according to the EU Technical Guidance Document for Environmental Risk Assessment for New and Existing Substances (draft-version October 1995). Musk ketone and musk xylene are used in fragrances for cosmetics and household products. The initial environmental risk assessment is based on information and results of studies provided by the fragrance industry as represented in the Netherlands by the Association of Fragrances and Food-Additives Producers (NEA), by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) and international open literature. Evaluated are risks for aquatic organisms in surface water and soil organisms in soil after application of sewage sludge. Secondary poisoning of fish-eating mammals has been considered as well. The Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) is compared with the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC) to obtain PEC/PNEC ratios. Since monitoring data were available in water and fish, also these ratios could be determined using real-world concentrations instead of the predicted ones. All PEC/PNEC ratios, except for the soil compartment were less than one.
