Monitoring environmental quality of stony construction materials 2003-2006

Monitoring kwaliteit bouwstoffen 2003-2006

Synopsis

Rainwater will leach substances, such as metal ions, from building materials into the environment. The Dutch Building Materials Decree provided, in the case of stony building materials, standards for such immissions to soil and surface water. In the transition to a new system of standards, that has been incorporated in 2007 in the Dutch Decree on Soil Quality, a number of standards in the Building materials Decree has been liberalized. To establish whether this liberalization would evoke in a diminishing of the environmental quality of the building materials, leaching data have been monitiored, at request of the Ministry of Housing, Spatial planning and and the Environment, before and after the mentioned liberalization. A statistical analysis of the leaching data revealed that any loss in environmental quality of the building materials involved, could not be assessed, neither in 2005, nor in 2006.
