RIVM and incidents In emergencies, a quick and efficient response is
required, based on reliable information. RIVM plays a key role in
providing knowledge and information to response organisations and
thereby limiting the consequences of incidents and disasters
that present a threat to human health and the environment. Emergencies In the event of such emergencies as the release of
hazardous chemicals, radiation or nuclear accidents, and terrorist
attacks, local and provincial authorities spring into action.
In such events, RIVM plays an advisory role and is responsible for
providing accurate information, measurement data and model
calculations with the aim of limiting the consequences to human
health and the environment. Hazardous chemicals In events like fire, an overturned tanker, or
health complaints of unknown cause, information has to be supplied
rapidly about the nature, concentration and dispersion of
chemicals, as well as the potential hazards to human health and the
environment.
On the basis of field measurements and analyses and model
calculations, the
Environmental Incident Service (MOD) advises on the
consequences for human health and the environment. Nuclear accidents An accident in a nuclear power plant can lead to the
release of radioactive material into the environment. The National
Radioactivity Network signals any increase in radiation levels.
With data from the monitoring network and model calculations, RIVM
estimates the potential radiation exposure and recommends effective
prevention measures. RIVM also provides information about medical
decontamination procedures and treatment of radiation victims,
advises on the need for subsequent health investigations and
provides support in carrying out these investigations. National Poisons Informations Centre (NVIC) The expertise of the National Poisons
Information Centre (NVIC) (in Dutch only) can be called upon in
the event of disaster with threats to public health. Besides
supporting relief workers, medical professionals and government
organisations with medical and toxicological expertise, the RIVM
can carry out rapid risk analyses. There is a 24-hour telephone
service for information on acute poisoning. |
