End to Marburg risk 1 August 2008

The risk of further spreading of theMarburgvirus in theNetherlandshas come to an end.

On11 July 2008, a Dutch woman died ofMarburghaemorrhagic fever, a serious illness caused by theMarburgvirus, which she had contracted inUgandaduring a visit to a bat cave. Three weeks have passed since people last came into contact with the patient. One can become ill up to 21 days after being in contact with aMarburgpatient. A hundred and thirty people who had been in contact with the patient during the infectious period were asked to check their body temperature twice a day. They no longer need to do this now. None of the people monitored have been infected with theMarburgvirus.
