Abstract

Public Health Status and Forecasts 1997 (PHSF 1997): the Sum of the Parts provides a comprehensive overview of the health status of the Dutch population and its developments over time. Specific topics addressed include: basic data on health and health determinants, health inequalities, composite measures of public health, effects of prevention, effects of health care, health care needs and consumption and future developments in health status and their consequences for the health care system. On each of these issues a separate background report was issued (in Dutch). More than 250 experts from thoughout the Netherlands contributed to PHSF 1997. PHSF intends to offer the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport basic information for the evaluation of current policy and the development of new policy. The main findings include among many other things: (1) the narrowing of the gap in life expectancy between man and women, (2) the fact that health inequalities are rather increasing than declining, (3) the increasing needs for health care expenditures in the near future, as compared with current policy assumptions, (4) the pinpointing of significant possibilities for improving prevention effectiveness, notably with respect to life style risk factors in young people and (5) the need for increasing efforts to establish knowledge on the effectiveness of health care interventions. Based on these findings recommendations for health policy have been made.
