Abstract

The Health status of the people living in the big cities in The Netherlands is worse compared to the rest of the Dutch people. This is a consequence of the lagging health status of the inhabitants of the deprived areas within the cities. A broad effort is needed to improve the health status of this group. The Public health sector cannot manage this alone, because many of the opportunities are within the range of influences of other policy areas. Especially the urban policy is able to contribute to the improvement of the health of the urban population.
