In collaboration with the Dutch Municipal Health Services (MHS) the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has produced a set of municipal health profiles. Every municipality has now a profile that displays the image of the health of the local population. These profiles display a uniform set of indicators about the public health of all municipalities in the Netherlands. These local indicator data can now be compared with the average of the regions where the municipality belongs to as well as the national average. The data and graphs of these Dutch municipal health profiles are published on a website: www.rivm.nl/gemeentelijke-gezondheidsprofielen

A municipal health profile contains data for indicators such as life expectancy, mortality (by several causes of death), as well as the prevalence of a number of diseases and disorders. A number of demographic indicators are also presented, such as population composition by age and sex, the difference between the total number of deaths and the number of births and the net migration. Visitors of the website can also see how the municipality scores for various risk factors such as smoking, alcohol intake and obesity as compared to regional and national averages. Finally, some other indicators such as the vaccination rate, the accessibility of certain healthcare services and socio-economic health differences (by income and education) are visualized in a number of ways.

The Dutch Ministry of Health commissioned the RIVM to create these health profiles. They are based on existing data coming from the regional health authorities, from Statistics Netherlands and the RIVM. For example, the geographic information that is normally presented in the RIVM website www.volksgezondheidenzorg.info is presented here not in maps. The data is 'rotated' here and presented topic wise for each municipality separately. This report presents an overview and justification of the indicators chosen and methodology applied. Additionally, maintenance requirements to keep these municipal health profiles up to date are described and possible extensions are suggested.

Het RIVM heeft in samenwerking met de GGD'en de zogeheten gemeentelijke gezondheidsprofielen gemaakt. Hierop staat per gemeente het beeld van de gezondheid van de lokale bevolking weergegeven. Informatie over de volksgezondheid van alle gemeenten in Nederland zijn in de profielen uniform weergegeven. Ook kunnen de cijfers uit het profiel worden vergeleken met het gemiddelde van de GGD-regio waar de gemeente in ligt en het landelijke gemiddelde. De gemeentelijke gezondheidsprofielen zijn te vinden op: www.rivm.nl/gemeentelijke-gezondheidsprofielen.

Een gezondheidsprofiel geeft cijfers weer zoals de levensverwachting, sterftecijfers naar doodsoorzaak, en de mate waarin een aantal ziekten en aandoeningen voorkomen. Ook is een aantal demografische gegevens opgenomen, zoals de bevolkingsgroei, het verschil tussen het totaal aantal sterfgevallen en het aantal geboortes (het geboorteoverschot), het migratiesaldo en de opbouw van de bevolking naar leeftijd en geslacht. Bezoekers kunnen ook zien hoe gemeenten scoren op verschillende leefstijlfactoren, zoals roken, drinken en overgewicht. Verder staan de vaccinatiegraad, de bereikbaarheid van zorgvoorzieningen en sociaaleconomische verschillen (naar inkomen en opleiding) in grafieken weergegeven.

De gezondheidsprofielen zijn op verzoek van het ministerie van VWS gemaakt, op basis van bestaande data van onder meer de GGD'en, het CBS en het RIVM. Zo wordt de geografische informatie uit www.volksgezondheidenzorg.info niet op onderwerpen ontsloten, maar per gemeente. In dit rapport worden onder andere een overzicht en verantwoording gegeven van de gekozen indicatoren. Daarnaast is beschreven wat nodig is om de profielen te onderhouden en worden mogelijke uitbreidingen aangereikt.
