English Abstract
The Uranium Enrichment Company (URENCO) measures its own release of radioactivity into the wastewater and atmosphere. The RIVM performs eight times per year a contra expertise on these measurements. This form of contra-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by URENCO. The samples of wastewater and ventilation air are taken by URENCO at various time points dispersed throughout the year.

RIVM determined the gross alpha and gross bèta activity in eight wastewater samples and 40 samples of ventilation air. As a rule, Urenco wastewater contains low levels of gross alpha and gross bèta activity.
The measurements of gross alpha and gross bèta in the eight waste water samples show that the activity concentrations are rather low: 0,4 - 9 kBq.m-3 for gross-alpha and 0,4 - 14 kBq.m-3 for gross-bèta. The sample with 14 kBq.m-3 of gross-bèta activity contained most likely traces of the natural nuclide 40K. In general, the results of RIVM and Urenco were in agreement.

Radioactivity levels in ventilation air are very close to those levels expected due to the natural presence of radon in the outside atmosphere. For gross alpha 0.006 - 0.04 mBq.m-3 was found and for gross bèta 0.02 - 0.23 mBq.m-3. The agreement with the measurement results of Urenco was reasonable.

Considering the natural gross-bèta activity, and the ratio gross alpha / gross bèta due to natural radon daughters in outside air it is unlikely that a release of uranium occurred in 2017 during normal production.

De fabriek Urenco Nederland, die uranium verrijkt, meet hoeveel radioactiviteit het in het eigen afvalwater en ventilatielucht loost. Het RIVM controleert deze metingen acht keer per jaar. Met deze 'contra-expertise' controleert RIVM of de analyses die Urenco zelf uitvoert, betrouwbaar zijn. De te analyseren monsters worden verspreid over het jaar door Urenco genomen.

Net als in voorgaande jaren komen de totaal-alfa resultaten en de gamma-analyses van afvalwater uit de contra-expertise in 2017 redelijk overeen. Uit de metingen blijkt dat de activiteitsconcentraties in afvalwater in de acht monsters betrekkelijk laag zijn: 0,4 - 9 kBq.m-3 voor totaal-alfa en 0,4 - 14 kBq.m-3 voor totaal-bèta. In het monster met 14 kBq.m-3 aan totaal-bèta activiteitsconcentratie was waarschijnlijk het natuurlijke nuclide 40K de oorzaak van deze verhoging.

De radioactiviteit in ventilatielucht ligt zeer dicht bij het niveau van de hoeveelheid radon die van nature in de buitenlucht aanwezig is. Voor totaal alfa is een activiteitsconcentratie van 0,006 - 0,04 mBq.m-3 gevonden en voor totaal bèta 0,02 - 0,23 mBq.m-3. De resultaten van de meetwaarden van Urenco in ventilatielucht kwamen redelijk overeen met de RIVM-analyses.

In buitenlucht wordt de natuurlijke totaal alfa en bèta-activiteit veroorzaakt door radon-dochters, net als de verhouding tussen de totaal alfa- en totaal bèta-activiteit. De verhouding zou heel anders zijn wanneer uranium vrijkomt. Daarom is het aannemelijk dat er in 2017 geen uranium in ventilatielucht is vrijgekomen.

RIVM voert de contra-expertises jaarlijks uit in opdracht van de Autoriteit Nucleaire Veiligheid en Stralingsbescherming (ANVS).
