The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has developed a standard method for calculating the percentage of people in the Netherlands that meet the new Physical Activity Guidelines; the method can also be used to calculate the percentage of people that engage in sports at least once a week. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport uses these numbers for its policy on sports and physical activity.

The method is intended for researchers. Using this standard method of calculation ensures that their results are more comparable. The method can be downloaded via www.sportenbewegenincijfers.nl/methode. RIVM has developed the method in response to the Physical Activity Guidelines published by the Health Council of the Netherlands in August 2017. These physical activity guidelines replaced the 'Dutch physical activity norm (NNGB)', 'fitnorm' and 'combinorm', which applied up until then.

The calculation is based on answers to a questionnaire on physical activity, known as the SQUASH questionnaire. In the questionnaire, people indicate how many days a week they walk or cycle to their work or school and the activities they carry out at work or school. They also indicate their household chores and recreational activities, such as walking, cycling, playing outside and sports, along with how much time they spend on each activity per day.

Based on this data, RIVM calculates how long and how frequently people are physically active and engage in sports. Finally, a calculation is made of the percentage of the population that is physically active in accordance with the guidelines or engages in sports on a weekly basis.

Physical activity is important for good health. A person meets the Physical Activity Guidelines by accumulating sufficient amounts of 'moderate intensive' or 'vigorous intensive' activities every week; these might comprise brisk walking, trampoline jumping or playing football. In addition, to meet the guidelines a person should perform sufficient amounts of muscle and bone strengthening activities such as weight training, cycling or swimming. In 2018, 47% of the Dutch population of 4 years and older met the physical activity guidelines and 53% engaged in sports every week.

Het RIVM heeft een methode ontwikkeld om op een standaard manier te berekenen hoeveel mensen in Nederland voldoen aan de nieuwe Beweegrichtlijnen. Met deze methode kan ook berekend worden hoeveel mensen minimaal een keer per week sporten. Het ministerie van VWS gebruikt deze cijfers voor hun beleid over sport en bewegen.

De methode is bedoeld voor onderzoekers. Door de standaardberekening kunnen zij hun resultaten beter onderling vergelijken. De methode is te downloaden via www.sportenbewegenincijfers.nl/methode. Het RIVM heeft de methode ontwikkeld naar aanleiding van de Beweegrichtlijnen die de Gezondheidsraad in augustus 2017 uitgaf. De Beweegrichtlijnen vervangen de 'Nederlandse Norm Gezond Bewegen (NNGB)', 'fitnorm' en 'combinorm', die tot dan toe golden.

Voor de berekening worden de antwoorden gebruikt van een vragenlijst over bewegen, de zogeheten SQUASH-vragenlijst. Mensen geven daarin aan hoeveel dagen per week ze besteden aan wandelen en fietsen naar hun werk of school en aan de activiteiten die ze daar doen. Dat geldt ook voor activiteiten in het huishouden en in de vrije tijd, zoals wandelen, fietsen, buitenspelen en sport. Daarnaast geven ze aan hoeveel tijd per dag ze aan een activiteit besteden.

Op basis van deze gegevens berekent het RIVM hoeveel tijd mensen per week bewegen en sporten. Ten slotte wordt berekend welk percentage van de bevolking volgens de richtlijnen beweegt of wekelijks sport.

Bewegen is belangrijk voor een goede gezondheid. Iemand voldoet aan de Beweegrichtlijnen door elke week genoeg 'matig of zwaar intensieve' activiteiten te doen, zoals stevig wandelen, trampoline springen of voetballen. Ook zijn hiervoor voldoende spier- en botversterkende activiteiten nodig, zoals krachttrainingen, fietsen of zwemmen. In 2018 voldeed 47 procent van de Nederlandse bevolking van 4 jaar en ouder aan de beweegrichtlijn,53 procent deed wekelijks aan sport.
