English Abstract
The Center for Infectious Disease Control (CIb) at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has put special focus on the health of employees since 2006. This has resulted from the project 'Infectious disease control and employee health' carried out by the CIb as commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW). The aim of this project is to improve the health of employees by taking working conditions into account when infectious disease control is undertaken.

Increasing and sharing the knowledge base: In line with the project, measures have been developed for increasing the knowledge based on work-related infectious diseases in employers and employees. This knowledge is shared with occupational health professionals, who provide support to employers with regard to their occupational health policy. Employers must be aware of the risks of infection occurring at work and of the protection measures that can be taken to prevent such a situation. Such awareness on the part of employers helps to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. The electronic message service for occupational health professionals (Arbo-inf@ct) and articles in specialist journals are examples of how this knowledge is spread. Furthermore, special reference to employees has been made in the RIVM health education tools intended for use by the Public Health Services (GGD) and in the LCI infectious disease guidelines.

This project has also resulted in special focus being placed on the health of employees involved in an outbreak of an infectious disease. For this purpose, an occupational health professional is now part of the national outbreak management team (OMT) and expertmeetings. Finally, the project helps to provide SZW with more detailed information on the type of work being done by those who come into contact with infections that occur at work. To this end, a yearly surveillance report is produced that collects data on the type of infectious diseases contracted by employees and to identify trends.

Measures 2010-2011: During 2010-2011, new agreements were made on the composition of the OMT and the occupational health management team (AMT). An occupational health professional was added to the OMT and the AMT was strengthened by adding a group of specialist occupational health professionals. These professionals contribute to the implementation of infectious disease control, knowledge distribution and development. In addition, a Pregnancy Memorandum has been drawn up which contains an overview of the infectious diseases that can have harmful effects before, during and after a woman's pregnancy. Finally, measures have been taken to ensure a more structural distribution of knowledge. To this end, presentations were given at conferences and papers published in journals.

Sinds 2006 heeft het Centrum Infectieziektebestrijding (CIb) van het RIVM structureel aandacht voor de gezondheid van werknemers. Dit komt voort uit het project 'Infectieziektebestrijding en Werknemersgezondheid', dat het CIb in opdracht van het ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid (SZW) uitvoert. Het doel van dit project is de gezondheid van werknemers te verbeteren, door bij werkomstandigheden expliciet rekening te houden met infectieziekte risico's.

Kennis vergroten en verspreiden: Voor het project worden maatregelen ontwikkeld om de kennis over infectieziekten bij werknemers en werkgevers te vergroten. Deze kennis wordt gedeeld met arboprofessionals, die werkgevers ondersteunen in hun arbobeleid. Werkgevers dienen namelijk op de hoogte te zijn van infectierisico's die samenhangen met het werk en de beheersmaatregelen die getroffen kunnen worden. Met die kennis kunnen zij werknemers hun werk veilig en gezond laten uitvoeren. Voorbeelden van de kennisverspreiding zijn de digitale berichtenservice voor arboprofessionals (Arbo-inf@ct) en artikelen in vaktijdschriften. Bovendien is er structurele aandacht voor werknemers in voorlichtingsmateriaal van het RIVM (toolkits) en de LCI-richtlijnenbundel.

Daarnaast heeft het CIb door dit project specifiek aandacht voor de gezondheid van werknemers die bij uitbraken zijn betrokken. Dit komt onder andere tot uiting in de deelname van een arboprofessional in het Outbreak Management Team (OMT) en deskundigheidsberaden. Tot slot draagt het project eraan bij dat SZW meer zicht krijgt op de mate waarin werknemers op hun werk met infectieziekten te maken krijgen. Hiervoor is onder andere een surveillancerapport gemaakt, waarin wordt verzameld welke infectieziekten bij welke werknemers optreden en welke trend daarin valt waar te nemen.

Maatregelen 2010-2011: In 2010-2011 is onder andere de ondersteuning van de arboprofessional in het OMT procedureel vastgelegd en is het Arbo Management Team (AMT) uitbreid met een groep deskundige arboprofessionals. Zij dragen bij aan de bestrijding van uitbraken van infectieziekten, kennisverspreiding en -ontwikkeling. Ook is een zwangerschapsnotatie opgesteld, waarin een overzicht wordt gegeven van infectieziekten die schadelijke gevolgen kunnen hebben voor, tijdens en na de zwangerschap. Daarnaast zijn maatregelen getroffen om de kennis gestructureerder te verspreiden. Zo zijn publicaties uitgebracht, evenals presentaties op symposia.
