English Abstract
In 2011 and the first half of 2012 outbreaks of mumps and pertussis were the most striking events concerning infectious diseases in the Netherlands. This is concluded in the State of Infectious Diseases in 2011. The purpose of this report is to provide insight into developments of infectious diseases in the Dutch population. This report also describes current international developments that are relevant to the Netherlands. The information contained in this yearly publication is compiled for policymakers at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS).

One particular topic is highlighted each year. This time the focus is on bioinformatics and its relevance for infectious disease research and public health. In bioinformatics biology, mathematics and computer science come together with the aim to unravel information coded in biological molecules. Development of advanced sequencing techniques in the laboratory and the availability of increasingly powerful computers make bioinformatics into a rapidly evolving research field.

Data on the structure of DNA, RNA and proteins in pathogens are increasingly available in large quantities. Analysis software makes it possible to sort these complex data, to visualize and to interpret them, thus increasing our understanding of (molecular) epidemiology, the possibilities of pathogens to mutate, their interactions with their hosts and evolutionary strategies. This knowledge provides new perspectives for the control of infectious diseases. Bioinformatics is a diverse research field. Therefore it is important to set priorities in the development of bioinformatics expertise, diagnostic and research tools that contribute to infectious diseases control.

Rapport in het kort
In 2011 en de eerste helft van 2012 waren de meest in het oog springende ontwikkelingen op het gebied van infectieziekten in Nederland de uitbraken van bof en kinkhoest. Dit blijkt uit de Staat van Infectieziekten in Nederland, 2011, die inzicht geeft in ontwikkelingen van infectieziekten bij de Nederlandse bevolking. Het rapport beschrijft ook de ontwikkelingen in het buitenland die voor Nederland relevant zijn. Met deze jaarlijkse uitgave informeert het RIVM beleidsmakers van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS).

Elk jaar komt een thema aan bod; dit keer is dat bioinformatica en de relevantie van deze wetenschap voor infectieziekteonderzoek en infectieziektebestrijding. In de bioinformatica komen biologie, wiskunde en computerwetenschappen samen met als doel de informatie in biologische moleculen te ontsleutelen. Door het gebruik van geavanceerde diagnostische technieken in het laboratorium en de beschikking over steeds krachtiger computers is de bioinformatica een zich sterk ontwikkelend wetenschapsveld.

Gegevens over de structuur van DNA, RNA en eiwitten in ziekteverwekkers komen steeds vaker in grote hoeveelheden beschikbaar. Door software en analysemethoden te ontwikkelen maakt de bioinformatica het mogelijk om deze complexe gegevens te sorteren, inzichtelijk te maken en te duiden. Zo vergroten bioinformatische methoden ons inzicht in de (moleculaire) epidemiologie, in de mogelijkheden van ziekteverwekkers om te muteren, in hun interacties met gastheren en in hun evolutionaire strategieën. Deze kennis biedt de infectieziektebestrijding een nieuw perspectief. De bioinformatica is echter veelzijdig van karakter. Daarom is het van belang om keuzes te maken voor de bestrijding van infectieziekten bij de ontwikkeling van expertise, diagnostiek en onderzoek.
