English Abstract Because of their ozone depleting potential the most
important chlorofluorocarbons and halons have been subjected to
international control by the Montreal Protocol. Generally these substances
play also a significant role in the greenhouse effect. Also other existing
ozone depleting substances have been brought into the discussion:
alternative halocarbons, carbon tetrachloride and methylchloroform. This
report evaluates the consequences of different policies with respect to
these non-regulated products for climate change with the help of a developed
halocarbon modelu. RIVM has developed the Integrated Model for the
Assessment of the Greenhouse Effect (IMAGE). The new module adds these
alternative halocarbons to carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, CFC-11
and CFC-12, which were already covered by IMAGE.
