English Abstract
The inventory of current initiatives for the Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) of X-ray equipment reported was undertaken in response to a need for improvement in the QA of radiology departments expressed by the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate. Work on building the inventory started with a literature study and was further developed with the results of interviews with Dutch professionals and survey results from foreign experts. The inventory has led us to a number of conclusions, the most important of which are: European and Dutch regulations do not provide details on how the QA of X-ray equipment should be organised, professional associations need to formulate their own standards for QA. The current Dutch standard for QA of X-ray equipment is out-of-date and restricted to conventional techniques. For development of new guidelines, all professional associations involved will need to commit themselves to the QA of X-ray equipment. For the moment, the Inspectorate should formulate and publish requirements themselves. Now radiology departments are seen to go their own way. Possibilities for financial support from the Dutch government to draw up new standards have diminished. However, inspiration can be found abroad for this in the pioneer work of mainly British institutes, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), for example. For the final implementation of a new standard broad support will be needed and radiology departments will have to be involved. Multidisciplinary audits could help here if QA of X-ray equipment is involved.

Dit rapport bevat een inventarisatie van initiatieven voor kwaliteitsborging van apparatuur in de radiodiagnostiek. De aanleiding voor dit onderzoek is de constatering van de Inspectie voor de Gezondheidszorg dat de kwaliteitsborging op afdelingen radiologie verbetering behoeft. Voor deze inventarisatie is een literatuurstudie uitgevoerd, zijn interviews gehouden met Nederlandse deskundigen en is een enquete gestuurd naar experts in het buitenland. De belangrijkste conclusies die hieruit voortvloeien zijn de volgende: de wet schrijft niet precies voor wat kwaliteitsborging moet inhouden, de beroepsgroepen moeten daar zelf richtlijnen voor opstellen. Op dit moment is de veldstandaard verouderd en beperkt tot conventionele technieken. Voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe richtlijnen dient kwaliteitsborging van apparatuur door alle betrokken beroepsverenigingen hoog op de agenda te worden geplaatst. Voorlopig dient de Inspectie voor de Gezondheidszorg zelf eisen te formuleren en openbaar te maken om de kwaliteitsborging toch te kunnen toetsen. Op dit moment gaan afdelingen radiologie hun eigen weg. Voor het opstellen van een actuele veldstandaard voor kwaliteitsborging kan echter efficient gebruik gemaakt worden van het pionierswerk in het buitenland. Om een nieuwe standaard vervolgens geimplementeerd te krijgen is het noodzakelijk daarbij zoveel mogelijk afdelingen radiologie te betrekken. Hierbij kunnen multidisciplinaire visitaties een goed hulpmiddel zijn indien daarbij ook specifiek naar kwaliteitsborging van apparatuur gekeken wordt.
