English Abstract The study of psychological and social factors in
chronic diseases is a new area of research for the National Institute of
Public Health and Environmental Protection. In this report, a short
description of the state of the art in this research-area is given, as well
as a description of the gaps and needs in this research, what research in
the area other institutes in the Netherlands are conducting, and what the
position of the RIVM in this area will be. Psychological and social factors
play a part in several stages of the disease process. We limit ourselves fo
factors important for the etiology of several chronic diseases or their
determinants. Research shows that psychological and social factors are
related to lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. The
study of relationships between psychological and social factors, and
biological risk factors is relatively new. Some studies have been conducted
on psychological and social factors related to several diseases. Very
recently, a number of studies were reported on perceived health and quality
of life. Research activities of the RIVM will be focused in the short run
on psychological and social determinants of lifestyle- and biological
riskfactors, and on the relationship between characteristics of the social
network and morbidity and mortality. In a few years, research on quality of
life in a general population will be conducted. Future research at the RIVM
might be developed in the area of consequences of stress in a general
population.

Onderzoek naar psychische en sociale factoren bij
chronische ziekten is voor het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en
Milieuhygiene een geheel nieuw terrein. In dit rapport wordt kort
uiteengezet wat de stand van zaken is op dit onderzoeksterrein, welke
lacunes en behoeften kunnen worden geconstateerd, welke onderzoeken andere
instituten in Nederland uitvoeren en wat de plaats van het RIVM hierin zal
zijn. Psychische en sociale factoren spelen in op diverse aspecten van het
ziekteproces. Wij beperken ons hier tot die factoren die van belang zijn
voor het ontstaan van chronische aandoeningen of determinanten daarvan.
Psychische en sociale factoren, zo blijkt uit onderzoek, zijn gerelateerd
aan leefstijlfactoren zoals bijvoorbeeld roken en alcohol-consumptie.
Onderzoek naar de relaties tussen psychische en sociale factoren en
biologische risico-factoren staat nog in de kinderschoenen. Er is al wel
onderzoek gedaan naar psychische en sociale factoren in relatie tot
verschillende aandoeningen. De laatste paar jaar wordt veel onderzoek naar
ervaren gezondheid en kwaliteit van leven uitgevoerd. De
onderzoeksactiviteiten van het RIVM zullen in eerste instantie zijn gericht
op de relatie tussen psychische en sociale determinanten van leefstijl en
biologische risicofactoren, en op de relatie tussen kenmerken van het
sociale netwerk en morbiditeit en mortaliteit. Op langere termijn zal ook
onderzoek worden uitgevoerd naar de kwaliteit van leven in de algemene
populatie. Toekomstig onderzoek bij het RIVM zou kunnen worden ontwikkeld
op het gebied van de gevolgen van stress in de algemene
populatie.
