English Abstract
This report gives a broad overview of the present and future health status of the elderly and their arrangements for care in the Netherlands. The time horizon is 2020. Elderly are defined as people of 65 years and over. Life expectancy has increased and will further improve in future. At the same time most chronic diseases show a rising trend, apart from greying of the population. Possibilities to treat chronic conditions improve and the supply of medical devices increases. Partly due to these developments the number of years with physical disabilities is diminishing. Prevention of diseases is also an important topic in this report. Future care arrangements have to face not only changes in health status of the elderly, but also changes in household composition, levels of education, and income. The report elaborates estimations of the future demand for and use of care services by the elderly. These estimations are based on alternative trends in determinants of the demand for and use of care services.

Dit rapport geeft een breed overzicht van de gezondheidstoestand, verpleging en verzorging van ouderen in de periode 2000-2020. Onder ouderen worden in dit rapport personen vanaf 65 jaar verstaan. De levensverwachting is toegenomen en zal naar verwachting verder stijgen. Tegelijkertijd is bij de meeste chronische ziekten sprake van een stijgende trend, bovenop die van de vergrijzing. Ziekten kunnen steeds beter worden behandeld en er komen steeds meer en betere hulpmiddelen ter beschikking. Mede hierdoor is het aantal jaren zonder lichamelijke beperkingen toegenomen. Ook diverse mogelijkheden voor preventie van ziekten komen aan bod. Bij de toekomstige inrichting van de zorg moet niet alleen rekening worden gehouden met de veranderende gezondheidstoestand van ouderen, ook de samenstelling van het huishouden, het opleidingsniveau en het inkomen zijn van belang. Het rapport bevat basisramingen en enkele alternatieve ramingen van de potentiele vraag naar en het gebruik van verpleging en verzorging door ouderen. Volgens de basisraming stijgt de potentiele vraag met 49% en het gebruik met 24%.
