English Abstract In this report assessment of the bioavailability of
dioxins and furans from fly ash in two cows is described. The fly ash was
purchased from a company operating a solid waste incinerator. The results
of this study indicate that the bioavailability of the toxicologically
important congeners is 0.74 +/- 0.35% of the dose. As an indicator of the
bioavailability of dioxins in cows under field conditions this number must
be considered as a lower limit. Only part of the dioxins ingested by cows
is fly ash bound and this latter material is presumably more tenacious with
respect to dioxins than others.
