English Abstract
The intake of iodine in the population of the Netherlands is sufficient. However, the intake has decreased by about 20 to 25% since 2008. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) by order of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). The report gives the recommendation to monitor the iodine intake in the Dutch population.

Iodine is an essential nutrient for the normal growth and development of people and for a healthy metabolism. Iodine deficiency can cause malfunctioning of the thyroid and in young children it can even result in impaired brain development. However, an iodine intake that is too high can also disturb the functioning of the thyroid.

Iodine is a natural component of foods like dairy products and non-alcoholic beverages (e.g. water, coffee and tea, fruit juices, soft drinks). Additionally, bread is an important source of iodine because it contains iodized salt. Apart from bread, for some years, iodized salt may be added to other food groups such as bread substitutes, processed meat, and kitchen salt. Since 2008, it has been permitted to add iodized salt to almost all processed foods. At that time, however, the maximum level of iodine in salt was reduced to prevent a too high iodine intake. But in practice, food producers added iodized salt less frequently than expected. This explains the decrease in iodine intake compared to the situation prior to 2008.

Decrease of salt and iodine intake:
One aim of the VWS Ministry is to reduce the intake of salt in the population in the Netherlands. As a consequence, the consumption of iodized salt - which is an important source of iodine - will also decrease. This emphasizes the importance of monitoring the iodine intake in the Dutch population. If the iodine intake looks as if it is becoming deficient, then measures can be taken to boost the supply of iodine. For instance, food producers can be stimulated to use more iodized salt or the level of iodine in salt can be increased.

De Nederlandse bevolking krijgt voldoende jodium binnen, wel is de inname sinds 2008 met ongeveer 20 tot 25 procent gedaald. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van het RIVM in opdracht van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS). Aanbevolen wordt om de jodiuminname bij de Nederlandse bevolking in de gaten te houden.

Jodium is nodig voor een normale groei en ontwikkeling en voor een goede stofwisseling. Jodiumgebrek kan een slechtwerkende schildklier veroorzaken, en kan bij jonge kinderen bovendien leiden tot een verminderde hersenontwikkeling. Maar ook een te hoge jodiuminname kan de schildklierwerking verstoren.

Jodium zit van nature in voedingsmiddelen als zuivelproducten en nietalcoholische dranken (zoals water, koffie en thee, vruchtensappen, frisdranken). Daarnaast is brood, door het gebruik van gejodeerd zout, een belangrijke bron voor jodium. Behalve aan brood mag gejodeerd zout sinds enkele jaren aan bepaalde voedingsmiddelengroepen (broodvervangers, vleeswaren, keukenzout) toegevoegd worden. Sinds 2008 mag jodium aan vrijwel alle voedingsmiddelen worden toegevoegd. Toen is ook het maximum gehalte van jodium in zout verlaagd om een te hoge jodiuminname te voorkomen. In de praktijk blijken producenten van voedingsmiddelen echter minder vaak gejodeerd zout te gebruiken dan was aangenomen. Dit verklaart de gedaalde jodiuminname ten opzichte van vóór 2008.

Lagere zoutconsumptie en de jodiuminname:
Het ministerie van VWS streeft ernaar de zoutconsumptie te verlagen. Daardoor kan ook de consumptie van gejodeerd zout dalen, een belangrijke bron voor jodium. Het is daarom van belang de jodiuminname bij de Nederlandse bevolking in de gaten te houden. Als de jodiuminname onvoldoende lijkt te worden, kan deze op peil worden gehouden door bijvoorbeeld te stimuleren dat voedingsmiddelenproducenten meer gejodeerd zout gebruiken. Ook kunnen de jodiumgehaltes in zout worden verhoogd.
