English Abstract The applicability of the wet-only rainwater-collectors
of the Dutch 'Landelijk Meetnet Regenwater' for the sampling of rainwater
for the determination of mercury was investigated. These collectors are
applicable provided that the funnel and the collecting bottle are made of
borosilicate glass. In the bottle an amount of concentrated HCL (1 +
diluted with demineralized water) has to be placed prior to sampling in
order to prevent losses of mercury caused by adsorption and/or
volatilization. Diffusion of mercury from outer air to the collection
liquid was negligible over a period of seven days.
