English Abstract Between 1960 and 2003 the number of households in the
Netherlands increased from 3.2 million to 7 million. The average household
has not only decreased in size, but has also changed in composition. On the
one hand, household trends are determined by demographic factors such as
birth, mortality and international migration. On the other hand, they are
determined by factors related to people's life cycles. Described here is
how the future size and composition of Dutch households will change
according to four scenarios, Global Economy, Strong Europe, Transatlantic
Market and Regional Communities. In the Global Economy scenario, the number
of households increases to more than 10 million by 2040, while in the
Regional Communities scenario, the number of households peak at almost 7.5
million around 2030. A subsequent decrease leads ultimately to less than 7
million households by 2040. In the other two scenarios, the number of
households grows to about 8.5 million by 2040. The decrease in average
household size continues in all scenarios. The largest decrease is shown in
the Global Economy scenario (down to 1.93 persons per household) and the
smallest in the Regional Communities scenario (down to 2.19 persons). The
number of single-person households 5.5 million in 2040 will be highest in
the Global Economy scenario but only 2.5 million in the Regional
Communities scenario. The largest increase is expected in the higher age
groups, where the number of single-person households aged 65 and over will
double or even triple.
zullen veranderen.
In
Regional Communities scenario.
verdrievoudigen.
