English Abstract
In 2011, the State Secretary of Infrastructure and the Environment decided to monitor periodically whether air quality affects the health of residents in the region IJmond. This research is carried out by the RIVM and Community Health Service (GGD) Kennemerland. RIVM examines the medication use and GGD Kennemerland explores on behalf of the municipalities in the region the data from their local health monitor in relation to air quality.

The RIVM study has found no association between exposure to air pollution from Tata Steel and the use of antihypertensive medication by adults. The same applies to the use of respiratory medication by adults and children. Other local sources, including traffic, may affect medication use. The study covered the period 2006-2010. It will also be repeated for subsequent years.

The motivation for the study is the concern of residents about air pollution from Tata Steel (previously Corus and Hoogovens). In 2009 the RIVM studied the relations between emissions, local environmental quality and the health of residents. The study showed that the contribution of Tata Steel to the particulate matter levels in the air could lead to a slight increase in health problems. Also the incidence of various cancers in the region was studied. It was not possible to relate the additional cases of lung cancer in the region IJmond indisputably to past emissions from Tata Steel. In the next phase it is monitored to what extent the measures Tata Steel has taken to reduce emissions of particulate matter effects the health of the residents.
