English Abstract
Each member state of the EU is obliged to report on the (chemical) status of groundwater bodies every six years, starting in 2009. In the Netherlands, this status assessment is carried out at the provincial level by groundwater managers working in close conjunction with the local Water Boards and municipalities. The RIVM has recently established a protocol that provides guidance to Dutch groundwater managers for carrying out these assessment procedures in an unambiguous and uniform manner.
The Netherlands is categorized into 23 groundwater bodies. In accordance with the European Water Framework Directive, these bodies must achieve a good chemical and quantitative status by - at the latest - 2015.
This protocol is based on European directives, guidance documents and published reports. Lessons learned from an evaluation of the first status assessment by all stakeholders, carried out in the summer of 2008, were used to refine the protocol.

Het RIVM heeft een protocol opgesteld waarmee de grondwaterbeheerders in Nederland de chemische toestand van grondwaterlichamen op eenduidige wijze kunnen beoordelen. Nederland is verplicht om elke zes jaar de Europese Commissie te rapporteren over de chemische en kwantitatieve toestand van grondwater. De grondwaterbeheerders bij provincies voeren de beoordeling uit in samenwerking met waterschappen en gemeenten. Alle relevante actoren zijn bij de totstandkoming van het protocol betrokken.
Nederland is onderverdeeld in 23 grondwaterlichamen die volgens de Europese Kaderrichtlijn Water (KRW, richtlijn 2000/60/EC) uiterlijk in 2015 de goede grondwatertoestand moeten bereiken. Dit betekent dat zowel de kwantitatieve als de chemische toestand op zijn minst goed moet zijn.
Het protocol is opgesteld op basis van Europese richtlijnen (wetten), richtsnoeren (guidance documents) over dit onderwerp en relevante literatuur. Daarnaast is de eerste toestandbeoordeling van grondwaterlichamen in 2008 geevalueerd. Op basis van knelpunten die uit de evaluatie naar voren kwamen hebben de betrokken actoren samen afspraken gemaakt over de eerstvolgende toestandbeoordeling. Deze afspraken zijn opgenomen in dit protocol.
