English Abstract
After remediation of the acid tar pit in Vasse no health risks are expected for exposure to passers-by or people living in the neighbourhood of the tar pit. It is advised to conduct additional air measurements for several chemicals in close surrounding of the tar pit during remediation activities, to rule out risks during remediation activities. It is furthermore recommended to prepare a plan for aftercare to monitor the quality and stability of the capping of the acid tar pit. This is necessary to rule out direct contact with the contamination.

This conclusion is the result of a counter expertise on possible risks for human health during the remediation of the acid tar pit performed by the RIVM in order of the Province of Overijssel. The research institute KWR has performed a counter expertise on the risks for groundwater contamination by the acid tar pit in a separate report.

To assess possible risk some modeling was done based data collected during field measurements. To assess the future situation of the tar pit, a literature review as been conducted to determine international experiences for the remediation of tar pits.

Rapport in het kort
Na afronding van de geplande sanering van de zuurteerput in Vasse zijn geen risico's te verwachten voor de gezondheid van passanten en omwonenden. Wel worden er aanvullende luchtmetingen voor enkele stoffen aanbevolen op korte afstand van de teerput om risico's tijdens de sanering uit te sluiten. Verder wordt aanbevolen in het nazorgplan de kwaliteit/stabiliteit van de bovenafdichting te blijven monitoren. Dit om direct contact met de verontreiniging uit te sluiten.

Dit blijkt uit een contra-expertise van het RIVM over de mogelijke risico's voor de gezondheid tijdens en na de sanering van de zuurteerput in opdracht van de provincie Overijssel. KWR heeft in een separate rapportage een contra-expertise uitgevoerd voor de risico's van de teerput voor het grondwater.

Een inschatting van de mogelijke risico's is gemaakt met behulp van modelberekeningen en gegevens uit eerdere metingen. Om een beeld te krijgen van de toekomstige situatie is een literatuuronderzoek uitgevoerd naar de internationale ervaringen met (saneringen van) zuurteerputten.
