Fuel burning appliances in houses that are poorly maintained or have an open flue system carry a risk of exposure to carbon monoxide. However, currently available knowledge and insights have not been able to provide a representative view on the occurrence of chronic, repeated, exposure to carbon monoxide in Dutch buildings.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has concluded this in an exploratory study into the occurrence of chronic exposure to carbon monoxide in Dutch buildings. The VROM-Inspectorate was the commissioning body for this study.
Exposure to carbon monoxide can result in a number of symptoms, such as headache, dizziness and concentration disorders. Cases of severe poisoning can even be fatal. From the data available, it appears that the number of accidents each year is extremely variable, ranging from tens up to a few hundred. Approximately 8-12 people die each year as a direct result of carbon monoxide exposure. The information on carbon monoxide poisoning is largely based on cases of acute exposure. Only limited information is available on chronic carbon monoxide exposure.
Fuel burning appliances with open flues in Dutch houses can lead to risk situations. These appliances are mainly flueless gas-fired water heaters, fireplaces, gas heaters and gas cookers. But old central heating boilers that have not been properly maintained can also lead to carbon monoxide exposure. The maintenance of fuel burning appliances in the Netherlands has not been compulsory since the early nineteen-nineties and there is little or no monitoring of their safety.
Conducting research, inspection and home visits are good methods of gaining better insight into the national situation of exposure to carbon monoxide in Dutch buildings. Replacing fuel burning appliances with open flues, conducting periodic maintenance checks and increasing safety management, are all possible options for avoiding risk situations.

Slecht onderhouden en open verbrandingstoestellen in woningen leiden tot risico's voor blootstelling aan koolmonoxide. Echter, met de huidige kennis en inzichten is geen landsdekkend en representatief beeld ontstaan over het optreden van chronische, herhaaldelijke, blootstelling aan koolmonoxide in Nederlandse verblijfruimten.
Dit concludeert het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) in een verkennend onderzoek naar het optreden van chronische blootstelling aan koolmonoxide in Nederlandse verblijfruimten. De VROM-Inspectie is opdrachtgever van dit onderzoek.
Blootstelling aan koolmonoxide kan verschillende gezondheidsklachten tot gevolg hebben, zoals hoofdpijn, duizelingen en concentratiestoornissen. Bij een ernstige vergiftiging kan het zelfs dodelijk zijn. Uit de ongevallenstatistiek blijkt dat er jaarlijks enkele tientallen tot honderden ongevallen plaatsvinden en er ongeveer 8-12 doden vallen als gevolg van blootstelling aan koolmonoxide. Kennis over koolmonoxide-intoxicaties blijft veelal beperkt tot acute blootstellingssituaties. Er is beperkte informatie over chronische blootstelling aan koolmonoxide.
Open verbrandingsinstallaties in Nederlandse woningen leiden tot risicosituaties. Het betreft meestal afvoerloze geisers, open haarden, gaskachels en gasfornuizen. Maar ook oude en niet goed onderhouden cv-ketels kunnen leiden tot blootstelling aan koolmonoxide. Onderhoud aan verbrandingsinstallaties in Nederland is sinds begin jaren '90 niet meer verplicht en er is weinig of geen toezicht op de veiligheid van deze installaties.
Het uitvoeren van onderzoek, inspecties en huisbezoeken zijn goede methoden om beter inzicht te krijgen in de landelijke situatie rondom blootstelling aan koolmonoxide in Nederlandse verblijfruimten. Het vervangen van open verbrandingsinstallaties, het uitvoeren van periodieke keuringen voor onderhoud en meer toezicht op de veiligheid van installaties zijn mogelijke opties om risicosituaties te vermijden.
