English Abstract
Reported here is the validation of four Dutch standards that are important for determining the concentration of radionuclides emitting so-called alpha or beta radiation. Both gross-alpha and gross-beta measurements are very useful for fast and easy screening of environmental samples after a nuclear accident. The texts for the standards were both improved and modernised. RIVM carried out this validation in cooperation with the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut and the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group for the standards NVN 5622, NVN 5627, NVN 5636 and NEN 6421. The validation was commissioned by the Netherlands Normalisation Institute. Analytical characteristics of the standards, including repeatability, accuracy, reproducibility and detection limit, were also determined by intercomparison in 6 to 10 laboratories.

Vier Nederlandse normen, die van belang zijn voor het vaststellen van concentraties aan radioactieve stoffen die zogenaamde alfa- of beta straling uitzenden, zijn gevalideerd. Totaal-alfa en totaal-beta bepalingen zijn onder andere van groot nut bij een snelle en simpele screening van milieumonsters ten tijde van een nucleair ongeval. Het gaat om de normen NVN 5622, NVN 5627, NVN 5636 en NEN 6421. In opdracht van het Nederlandse Normalisatie Instituut heeft het RIVM deze validatie uitgevoerd samen met het Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) en de Nuclear Research en Consultancy Group (NRG). De normteksten zijn bijgewerkt en gemoderniseerd. Daarnaast zijn de prestatiekenmerken van de normen vastgesteld. Het gaat daarbij om haalbaarheid, juistheid, reproduceerbaarheid, nauwkeurigheid en aantoonbaarheid. Deze prestatiekenmerken zijn vastgesteld door middel van onderzoek in zes tot tien laboratoria.
