It is unlikely that overhead power lines affect the adverse health effects of particulate matter. Power lines may charge particulate matter, but the additional charge is too small to induce extra adverse health effects. That concludes RIVM in an update of a previous literature survey. Public criticism has prompted update.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment (formerly Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and the Environment) has asked RIVM for an update because four years have passed and for criticism on the 2007 survey from residents, among others. RIVM investigated recent publications and responded to the criticism. Also, the positions of several national and international organizations dealing with this issue were collected.

No health effects expected.
The literature survey 'Power lines and particulate matter' analyzed in 2007 the scientific literature in the field of charged particulate matter in the vicinity of overhead power lines and the possible health effects. The reason for this survey was concern expressed by people living close to both a heavy traffic road and a power line. Their concern was motivated by scientific publications claiming that electrical discharges in high voltage wires can charge particulate matter. This interaction would increase the deposition of particulate matter in lungs, airways or on the skin and enhance the already known effects (heart, lung and airways complaints) of particulate matter.

Conclusie uit 2007 staat nog steeds.
Het is niet aannemelijk dat bovengrondse hoogspanningslijnen de schadelijke gezondheidseffecten van fijn stof beïnvloeden. Hoogspanningslijnen kunnen fijn stof soms wel extra opladen, maar dat is te weinig om extra schadelijke effecten te veroorzaken. Dat concludeert het RIVM in een update van eerder onderzoek. De publicaties die sinds 2007 zijn verschenen, geven geen aanleiding deze conclusies te herzien.

Maatschappelijke kritiek was aanleiding update.
Het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu (voorheen VROM) heeft het RIVM om een update verzocht omdat er vier jaar zijn verstreken en vanwege kritiek op het onderzoek uit 2007, onder andere van omwonenden. Het RIVM heeft de recente publicaties onderzocht en op de kritiek gereageerd. Ook zijn de standpunten van enkele nationale en internationale organisaties die zich met dit onderwerp bezighouden verzameld.

Geen gezondheidseffecten te verwachten.
Het literatuuronderzoek 'Hoogspanningslijnen en fijn stof' uit 2007 analyseerde de wetenschappelijke literatuur op het gebied van opgeladen fijn stof in de buurt van bovengrondse hoogspanningslijnen en de mogelijke gezondheidseffecten daarvan. Aanleiding hiervoor was bezorgdheid onder mensen die bij een drukke verkeersweg én een hoogspanningslijn wonen. Deze was ingegeven door wetenschappelijke publicaties waarin werd beweerd dat elektrische ontladingen bij de hoogspanningsdraden fijn stof kunnen opladen. Hierdoor zou meer fijn stof in longen, luchtwegen of op de huid blijven 'plakken', en daarmee de effecten van fijn stof (hart- en luchtwegaandoeningen) versterken.
