English Abstract
The Atlas of our Living Environment is an electronic system that allows citizens and professionals to get information about the quality of their local situation in the field of environment and health. In the first, exploration phase of the development it appears that the Atlas complies to the needs of the users. Also the necessary techniques and information/data are available and the system in total functions as expected. Moreover, information about various locations can be compared. However more research and reflection with the partners (municipalities, provinces, environmental institutes, municipal health ser-vices and the federal government) is necessary, as they are the deliverers and managers of the data.
These are the conclusions of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) after the successful exploration phase in which the Atlas Demonstrator has been developed. Other important points of interest have to be elaborated in the next phases, for example: an user-friendly system, stan-dardization of (meta)data, system performance and possibilities for interaction between governments and users (citizens, professionals).
The Atlas of our Living Environment is a so called web based application and development of this sys-tem will be executed during a 5-year program on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. Dutch municipalities and provinces are obliged to make information about the living environment public. The Atlas connects all the information available. The RIVM coor-dinates the technical and informational parts of the system on behalf of the ministry.
In this report new means for presenting environmental health information and new techniques for geo-ICT (open source, web services) are tested on feasibility. This report describes these possibilities.

Momenteel wordt de Atlas Leefomgeving ontwikkeld die burgers en professionals inzicht geeft in de kwaliteit van de lokale leefomgeving wat betreft milieu en gezondheid. Uit de eerste, verkennende fase van de ontwikkeling blijkt dat de Atlas voldoet aan de wensen van de gebruiker. Ook zijn de benodigde techniek en informatie/data aanwezig en functioneert het systeem als geheel. Bovendien kan de informatie over verschillende locaties met elkaar worden vergeleken. Wel is nog nadere afstemming met de bronhouders (gemeenten, provincies, milieudiensten, GGD'en en de rijksoverheid) nodig, die de data aanleveren en beheren.
Dit concludeert het RIVM nadat de verkennende fase, waarin de Atlas Demonstrator is ontwikkeld, positief is afgesloten. Andere aandachtspunten zijn de gebruiksvriendelijkheid van het systeem, de standaardisatie van de (meta)data, de prestaties van het systeem en de interactiemogelijkheden tussen overheden en gebruikers (burgers, professionals) en tussen de gebruikers zelf.
De Atlas Leefomgeving is een zogenoemde webbased applicatie en wordt in opdracht van het ministerie van VROM in vijf jaar ontwikkeld. Gemeenten en provincies zijn verplicht informatie over de leefomgeving openbaar te maken. De Atlas verbindt deze informatie met elkaar. Het RIVM coordineert in opdracht van VROM de technische en inhoudelijke invulling van de Atlas.
In dit rapport staan ook nieuwe manieren beschreven waarop milieu- en gezondheidsinformatie kan worden gepresenteerd. Daarnaast zijn nieuwe technieken uit de Geo-ICT (open source, webservices) op hun haalbaarheid voor gebruik in de Atlas getoetst.
