English Abstract In 1991 a study was reported, to determine the exposure
for the general Dutch population to dioxins and related compounds from food.
In that study concentrations of the compounds of interest in relevant food
items were combined with intake data. The results were used in a scenario
analysis, to define a standard for dioxins and related compounds in cow's
milk fat, according to the Food Commodities Act. In this study it was
noticed, that the median intake by the Dutch population was notably less
than expected on the basis of former national and international studies on
the same subject. A series of arguments were advanced to explain the
differences. It was decided to determine the amount of dioxins and related
compounds in a series of food duplicates, to test the relevance of the
various arguments. Results of chemical analysis showed that the median
intake for the study in 1991 was identical to the one from the food
duplicates, for the tetradioxin, the pentadioxin and pentafurans, a few
hexafurans, and planar PCB 126 and 169. For all other congeners, median
intake from the food duplicates was statistically significant higher
compared to the 1991 study. It is shown that these differences are not
likely caused by bias in the food consumption inquiry, and not by additional
exposure from vegetables and fruit, or food preparation processes. It was
concluded, that the difference could be explained if the concentrations of
the higher chlorinated congeners, and PCB 77 in various food items was
decreased in time.
verwante verbindingen in koemelkvet is vastgesteld.
bevatten.
