English Abstract
Concentrations of chromium, lead, cadmium, zinc and arsenic in shallow groundwater under Dutch acid sandy soils with natural and semi-natural vegetation were analysed in this study. At 156 sites we took 10 samples per site of groundwater from within 5 m below the soil surface. All samples were analysed for macro-elements. For each site a pooled sample was analysed for Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn and As. Arsenic and lead concentrations gave an incidental exceedance (5%) of Dutch target values. In general (70%) cadmium and chromium concentrations were higher than the target values. Zinc frequently (70%) exceeded even the test value requiring further research. Cadmium and zinc concentrations regularly (5 and 20% respectively) exceeded the cleanup value in the sandy soils of the southern part of the Netherlands. Relationships were derived between on the one hand atmospheric deposition of SOx, Zn, and Cd, forest area and groundwater level, and on the other concentrations of Cd and Zn. Using the relationships, we predict zinc concentrations to exceed the cleanup value in 6500 to 31,000 hectares. Cadmium concentrations are predicted to exceed the cleanup value in 2100 to 10,000 hectares.
