English Abstract
This report describes the development of a Decision Support System for the management of polluted soils. The system is designed to support the selection of appropriate remediation strategies for a contaminated site. The system consists of two main modules: a prediction module and an appraisal module. The prediction module aims to predict the results of remediation alternatives on a given site. This module contains a characterisation of the site, information on techniques, a procedure to link the site characteristics of a specific location to the technical information, and methods to predict the results of the alternatives on the given site. The appraisal module aims to process this information into a selection of one or more recommended alternatives and/or into recommendations for additional research. This module contains a procedure to eliminate inefficient alternatives and alternatives not meeting legal standards, a procedure to transform physical scores into appraisal scores, procedures to provide rankings of alternatives and a wide set of procedures for a sensitivity analysis. The system is based on the official dutch procedure for remediation of contaminated sites and is designed to be used in the first place by local authority officials.
