English Abstract This report describes the emissions and fuel consumption of the Target Group, "Heavy Trucks" powered by diesel engines, in the Netherlands. The processes in which these emissions are formed and where fuel is necessarily consumed are briefly outlined. The target group comprises Dutch and foreign heavy trucks, as far as the mileage covered in the Netherlands is concerned. For 1988 the following was reported: - the overall composition of the Dutch truck park, subdivided into the two vehicle catogories: trucks and trailers. - the mileage (km) made by these two categories in the Netherlands, subdivided into the categories: city traffic, motorways and other roads. - the diesel fuel consumed in the Netherlands by the two vehicle catogories for city traffic, motorways and other roads. - the NOx, CO, VOC, Particle, PAH, CO2 and SO2 emissions in the Netherlands produced by the two vehicle categories and the corresponding emission factors. - the fuel consumption (g/km) for the two vehicle categories in the three traffic categories distinguished. The possible technical solutions for lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions are then discussed. Also with a view to applying cleaner conversion of primary into mechanical energy, several alternative power sources are mentioned. Finally the legal standards required now and in the future for the emission of Nox, CO, VOC and particles are presented.
