English Abstract The State General Laboratory is a department of the
Ministery of Health. Cyprus has applied for full membership to the EC. It
therefore needs to comply with the anticipated EC-regulations with regard to
toxicological and ecotoxicological testing. In view of several arguments
the State General Laboratory found it necessary to start discussions on the
development of a special unit that should in due time complement the SGL
activities so that the compliance as to hazardous compounds and the
environmental exposure are actually observed. This in fact means the
development of an environmental Toxicology/Ecotoxicology unit (see various
reports) of the Cyprian government. In order to enable the SGL to start
with this completely new field of expertise the assistance was asked from
author of this report. In december a mission was undertaken to analyse the
problems and to provide advise on how to develop a new unit of environmental
toxicology/ecotoxicology. This report gives a short review of the
discussions and related observations follwed by a set of conclusions and
recommendations.
