English Abstract
As laid down by Dutch national law the fundamental selection instrument ('Basis Selectie Document' BSD) is to be used in national and regional government archives to separate records that should be preserved from records for which destruction is warranted. This method is designed by the National Archives of the Netherlands (NA) to control the tidal wave of records the NA anticipated after promulgation. This report extends report 840701002/1998 up to 2005, a valuation for all terms of reference the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM) and its predecessor, the National Institute of Public Health (RIV), were commissioned with from 1940 up to and including 1995. During the past decennium a main tasks of the RIVM namely "vaccine production and development" was established in a new institute: the Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI). The NVI appears as a separate actor in this BSD.

Het Basis Selectie Document (BSD) is het bij de Archiefwet 1995 voorgeschreven selectieinstrument voor overheidsarchieven. Met behulp van een BSD worden bewaartermijnen toegekend aan documenten waarbij onderscheid wordt gemaakt in bewaren (B) en vernietigen na een vastgestelde periode (V). De te bewaren documenten worden overgebracht naar het Nationaal Archief (NA).
Dit rapport bestrijkt de periode 1940-2005 en is een actualisatie van rapport 840701002/1998 waarin de handelingen met bewaartermijnen van het Rijksinstituut voor de Volksgezondheid (RIV) en de rechtsopvolger hiervan, het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieuhygiene (RIVM) staan beschreven over de periode 1940-1995. In het afgelopen decennium is de taak "vaccinontwikkeling en productie" ondergebracht bij het Nederlands Vaccin Instituut (NVI) dat per 1 januari 2003 als zelfstandige agentschap onder het ministerie van VWS is gepositioneerd. Het NVI komt als aparte actor voor in dit BSD.
