In the PRISMA project, RIVM and its four consortium partners conducted pilot studies with eight companies to help them better integrate Responsible innovation in their innovation process and business practices. These pilots provided case studies and good practices on responsible research and innovation (RRI).

The project was completed in 2019 and had a strong focus on documenting practical experiences from pilot projects on RRI. A number of important deliverables and reports have been published:

• PRISMA roadmap
• Roadmap case studies

Additionally, the work has accumulated in the launch of a standard which sets a new benchmark to address responsibility in innovation strategies.
The new CWA 17796 standard builds on existing national, Europe, and international standards and policies on corporate social responsibility, quality, risk, and innovation management, providing a management standard (Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle) focusing on research and innovation practices.
The guidelines have been developed by CEN/WS 105 experts, who represent the interest of the different stakeholders – industry, laboratories, public administration, university, and research institutes – on the basis of the experience of the EU European Union (European Union)-funded PRISMA project.

RIVM role

RIVM was responsible for work package 1 and has delivered an inventory of RRI -approaches relevant to this project (gender & diversity, specific challenges for transformative industries). This work resulted in an overview of practical tools (deliverable D1.1+ accessible Toolkit) aimed at pilot companies and future users.  Furthermore, we prepared the eight pilots (design, plan of action), including a strategy to incorporate the results of the pilots in the CSR policies of the companies involved. 

RIVM also played a role in the following:

• Testing and adapting the toolbox 
• Making the toolbox part of the final roadmap
• Development of a module about Safe Innovation for the Massive Open Online Course as part of the dissemination of the gained knowledge obtained in this project.

RIVM shared relevant expertise to PRISMA in the fields of risk assessment on Manufactured Nanomaterials, Synthetic Biology and Safe Innovation Approach.  RIVM colleagues Jaco Westra, Pim Klaassen and Korienke Smit were involved in PRISMA.
